Men Need Foot Care Too

To maintain optimal foot health, men should incorporate care routines into their daily regimen. These practices are important for preventing common issues such as rough skin and nail problems. Regular moisturizing helps combat dryness and prevents calluses. Cleaning between the toes is important for preventing bacterial growth and conditions like athlete's foot. Proper footwear selection is also important, and this involves making sure shoes fit well and have soft padding to minimize friction and callus formation. Additionally, trimming toenails straight across and exfoliating feet regularly with a body scrub can help maintain overall foot health. Wearing sandals or shoes in communal areas like gyms and public showers is important to prevent fungal infections. Finally, incorporating body powder into the routine can aid in absorbing excess moisture and alleviating discomfort, particularly for those who lead active lifestyles. If you have persistent pain, skin issues, or an infection on your feet, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist for an examination and any treatment deemed necessary.

Everyday foot care is very important to prevent infection and other foot ailments. If you need your feet checked, contact Brian Shwer, DPM from Southaven Foot Clinic. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Everyday Foot Care

Often, people take care of their bodies, face and hair more so than they do for their feet. But the feet are a very important aspect of our bodies, and one that we should pay more attention to. Without our feet, we would not be able to perform most daily tasks.

It is best to check your feet regularly to make sure there are no new bruises or cuts that you may not have noticed before. For dry feet, moisturizer can easily be a remedy and can be applied as often as necessary to the affected areas. Wearing shoes that fit well can also help you maintain good foot health, as well as making it easier to walk and do daily activities without the stress or pain of ill-fitting shoes, high heels, or even flip flops. Wearing clean socks with closed shoes is important to ensure that sweat and bacteria do not accumulate within the shoe. Clean socks help to prevent Athlete’s foot, fungi problems, bad odors, and can absorb sweat.

Pain at the back of a dancer’s ankle can happen for various reasons, ranging from overuse to specific injuries. Achilles tendonitis, a common condition among dancers, results from repetitive stress on the Achilles tendon, leading to inflammation and discomfort. Another possible cause is posterior impingement syndrome, often seen in dancers who frequently point their toes, causing compression and irritation at the back of the ankle joint. Additionally, Haglund's deformity, characterized by a bony prominence at the back of the heel, can exacerbate discomfort, especially when wearing tight-fitting shoes. If you are a dancer and are experiencing ankle pain, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.

Ankle pain can have many different causes and the pain may potentially be serious. If you have ankle pain, consult with Brian Shwer, DPM from Southaven Foot Clinic. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Ankle pain is any condition that causes pain in the ankle. Due to the fact that the ankle consists of tendons, muscles, bones, and ligaments, ankle pain can come from a number of different conditions.

Causes

The most common causes of ankle pain include:

  • Types of arthritis (rheumatoid, osteoarthritis, and gout)
  • Ankle sprains
  • Broken ankles
  • Achilles tendinitis
  • Achilles tendon rupture
  • Stress fractures
  • Tarsal tunnel syndrome
  • Plantar fasciitis

Symptoms

Symptoms of ankle injury vary based upon the condition. Pain may include general pain and discomfort, swelling, aching, redness, bruising, burning or stabbing sensations, and/or loss of sensation.

Diagnosis

Due to the wide variety of potential causes of ankle pain, podiatrists will utilize a number of different methods to properly diagnose ankle pain. This can include asking for personal and family medical histories and of any recent injuries. Further diagnosis may include sensation tests, a physical examination, and potentially x-rays or other imaging tests.

Treatment

Just as the range of causes varies widely, so do treatments. Some more common treatments are rest, ice packs, keeping pressure off the foot, orthotics and braces, medication for inflammation and pain, and surgery.

Education on Diabetic Foot Care

Educating diabetic patients about foot care is vital for preventing serious complications. Diabetes can lead to nerve damage and poor circulation in the feet, increasing the risk of infections and ulcers. Proper foot care practices, such as daily inspection, keeping feet clean and dry, trimming nails carefully, and wearing appropriate footwear, can help diabetic individuals avoid these issues. Additionally, understanding the importance of regular foot examinations by podiatrists can aid in early detection and treatment of any problems. Podiatrists play a vital role in assessing foot health, providing specialized care, and offering valuable guidance on preventive measures. If you have diabetes, it is strongly suggested that you schedule regular appointments with a podiatrist for examinations and important education that may help to prevent serious consequences of diabetes in the feet.

Diabetic Foot Care

Diabetes affects millions of people every year. The condition can damage blood vessels in many parts of the body, especially the feet. Because of this, taking care of your feet is essential if you have diabetes, and having a podiatrist help monitor your foot health is highly recommended.

The Importance of Caring for Your Feet

  • Routinely inspect your feet for bruises or sores.
  • Wear socks that fit your feet comfortably.
  • Wear comfortable shoes that provide adequate support.

Patients with diabetes should have their doctor monitor their blood levels, as blood sugar levels play such a huge role in diabetic care. Monitoring these levels on a regular basis is highly advised.

It is always best to inform your healthcare professional of any concerns you may have regarding your feet, especially for diabetic patients. Early treatment and routine foot examinations are keys to maintaining proper health, especially because severe complications can arise if proper treatment is not applied.

How Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome Is Treated

Tarsal tunnel syndrome, a condition in which the tibial nerve is compressed as it passes through the tarsal tunnel in the ankle, has a variety of treatment options. Conservative treatment is usually recommended at first. This may include rest and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs to reduce inflammation and alleviate pain. Shoe choice is also important. Wearing supportive footwear and using orthotic inserts can help alleviate pressure on the affected nerve. In cases where conservative measures do not resolve symptoms, corticosteroid injections may be administered to reduce inflammation and provide relief. Severe or persistent cases may require surgical intervention to release the compressed nerve. Each treatment approach is tailored to the patient's specific symptoms and needs. If you have pain and numbness along the inner side of the ankle or bottom of your foot and suspect you have developed tarsal tunnel syndrome, it is suggested you consult a podiatrist who can diagnose you and offer personalized treatment.

Tarsal tunnel syndrome can be very uncomfortable to live with. If you are experiencing tarsal tunnel syndrome, contact Brian Shwer, DPM of Southaven Foot Clinic. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

Tarsal tunnel syndrome, which can also be called tibial nerve dysfunction, is an uncommon condition of misfiring peripheral nerves in the foot. The tibial nerve is the peripheral nerve in the leg responsible for sensation and movement of the foot and calf muscles. In tarsal tunnel syndrome, the tibial nerve is damaged, causing problems with movement and feeling in the foot of the affected leg.

Common Cause of Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

  • Involves pressure or an injury, direct pressure on the tibial nerve for an extended period of time, sometimes caused by other body structures close by or near the knee.
  • Diseases that damage nerves, including diabetes, may cause tarsal tunnel syndrome.
  • At times, tarsal tunnel syndrome can appear without an obvious cause in some cases.

The Effects of Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

  • Different sensations, an afflicted person may experience pain, tingling, burning or other unusual sensations in the foot of the affected leg.
  • The foot muscles, toes and ankle become weaker, and curling your toes or flexing your foot can become difficult.
  • If condition worsens, infections and ulcers may develop on the foot that is experiencing the syndrome.

A physical exam of the leg can help identify the presence of tarsal tunnel syndrome. Medical tests, such as a nerve biopsy, are also used to diagnose the condition. Patients may receive physical therapy and prescriptive medication. In extreme cases, some may require surgery.

Peripheral arterial disease, also known as PAD, is a condition that happens when your leg arteries become narrow due to a build-up of fat inside them. It can cause pain and weakness in your legs and feet when you walk, but the pain generally dissipates when you rest. Some older people with PAD do not feel any symptoms because they may have other health problems, or their symptoms are not the usual foot and leg pain. Doctors use simple tests to find out if you have PAD. They measure the blood pressure in your ankles and arms and compare them. If the ankle pressure is lower, it means you might have PAD. This condition is more common as people get older, and it is linked to things that can include smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure, and elevated cholesterol levels. If you have peripheral arterial disease and feel pain in your feet and legs, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist who can perform a proper diagnosis, and guide you toward treatment that can help to improve blood flow.

Proper foot care is something many older adults forget to consider. If you have any concerns about your feet and ankles, contact Brian Shwer, DPM from Southaven Foot Clinic. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

The Elderly and Their Feet

As we age we start to notice many changes in our body, but the elder population may not notice them right away. Medical conditions may prevent the elderly to take notice of their foot health right away. Poor vision is a lead contributor to not taking action for the elderly.

Common Conditions

  • Neuropathy – can reduce feeling in the feet and can hide many life-threatening medical conditions.
  • Reduced flexibility – prevents the ability of proper toenail trimming, and foot cleaning. If left untreated, it may lead to further medical issues.
  • Foot sores – amongst the older population can be serious before they are discovered. Some of the problematic conditions they may face are:
  • Gouging toenails affecting nearby toe
  • Shoes that don’t fit properly
  • Pressure sores
  • Loss of circulation in legs & feet
  • Edema & swelling of feet and ankles

Susceptible Infections

Diabetes and poor circulation can cause general loss of sensitivity over the years, turning a simple cut into a serious issue.

Surgery After Recurrent Ankle Sprains

Many ankle sprains can improve with exercises and therapy, but in some cases, surgery is necessary. Surgical treatment focuses on the ligaments in the ankle, which are like bands holding the bones together. There are two main surgical approaches for ankle sprains. One involves repairing the ligaments to make them stable and stronger. The other method uses a piece of tendon to replace the damaged ligaments, offering increased stability. The primary goal of surgery is to restore the ankle's strength and stability, reducing the risk of further injuries. Each approach has its pros and cons. Ligament repair allows for better ankle movement and quicker healing, while tendon grafts provide more stability but may require a longer recovery period. There is also a small risk of nerve injury associated with the tendon graft method. Podiatrists typically attempt the ligament repair method first, reserving the tendon graft approach for cases where the initial surgery does not yield the desired results or when the ankle instability is particularly severe. If you have had repeated ankle sprains, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist to discuss whether ankle surgery is appropriate for you.

Foot surgery is sometimes necessary to treat a foot ailment. To learn more, contact Brian Shwer, DPM of Southaven Foot Clinic. Our doctor will assist you with all of your foot and ankle needs.

When Is Surgery Necessary?

Foot and ankle surgery is generally reserved for cases in which less invasive, conservative procedures have failed to alleviate the problem. Some of the cases in which surgery may be necessary include:

  • Removing foot deformities like bunions and bone spurs
  • Severe arthritis that has caused bone issues
  • Cosmetic reconstruction

What Types of Surgery Are There?

The type of surgery you receive will depend on the nature of the problem you have. Some of the possible surgeries include:

  • Bunionectomy for painful bunions
  • Surgical fusion for realignment of bones
  • Neuropathy decompression surgery to treat nerve damage

Benefits of Surgery

Although surgery is usually a last resort, it can provide more complete pain relief compared to non-surgical methods and may allow you to finally resume full activity.

Surgical techniques have also become increasingly sophisticated. Techniques like endoscopic surgery allow for smaller incisions and faster recovery times.

Understanding Numb Feet During Pregnancy

The phenomenon of numb feet during pregnancy is a common yet often perplexing experience for expectant mothers. The increased pressure on blood vessels and nerves, primarily in the lower extremities, is a key factor contributing to this sensation. As the uterus expands to accommodate the growing baby, it can exert pressure on the pelvic blood vessels, hindering optimal circulation. This reduced blood flow to the feet can result in numbness and tingling sensations. Furthermore, hormonal changes during pregnancy can impact nerve function, amplifying the likelihood of experiencing numbness. While this occurrence is generally harmless, pregnant women must prioritize proper footwear, avoid prolonged periods of standing, and incorporate gentle exercises to promote circulation. If you are experiencing foot pain or numbing sensations during your pregnancy, it is suggested that you visit a podiatrist who can provide you with additional relief methods.

Pregnant women with swollen feet can be treated with a variety of different methods that are readily available. For more information about other cures for swollen feet during pregnancy, consult with Brian Shwer, DPM from Southaven Foot Clinic. Our doctor will attend to all of your foot and ankle needs.

What Foot Problems Can Arise During Pregnancy?

One problem that can occur is overpronation, which occurs when the arch of the foot flattens and tends to roll inward.  This can cause pain and discomfort in your heels while you’re walking or even just standing up, trying to support your baby.

Another problem is edema, or swelling in the extremities. This often affects the feet during pregnancy but tends to occur in the later stages.

How Can I Keep My Feet Healthy During Pregnancy?

  • Wearing orthotics can provide extra support for the feet and help distribute weight evenly
  • Minimize the amount of time spent walking barefoot
  • Wear shoes with good arch support
  • Wear shoes that allow for good circulation to the feet
  • Elevate feet if you experience swelling
  • Massage your feet
  • Get regular, light exercise, such as walking, to promote blood circulation to the feet

Neuropathy, a condition that affects the peripheral nerves, can result in various symptoms, and often has a pronounced impact on the feet. Individuals experiencing neuropathy may encounter sensations of tingling, burning, or numbness in their lower extremities. These discomforting sensations can progress to sharp, stabbing pain, hindering mobility and diminishing overall quality of life. Loss of coordination and balance may also occur, elevating the risk of falls and injuries. Changes in skin texture and temperature, coupled with muscle weakness, are additional indicators of neuropathy. As the condition advances, individuals may develop foot deformities. Seeking medical attention when these signs arise is imperative to identify the underlying causes, which may include diabetes, infections, or autoimmune disorders. If you are experiencing symptoms of neuropathy in your feet, it is suggested that you visit a podiatrist who can accurately diagnose this condition and offer treatment methods.

Neuropathy

Neuropathy can be a potentially serious condition, especially if it is left undiagnosed. If you have any concerns that you may be experiencing nerve loss in your feet, consult with Brian Shwer, DPM from Southaven Foot Clinic. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment for neuropathy.

What Is Neuropathy?

Neuropathy is a condition that leads to damage to the nerves in the body. Peripheral neuropathy, or neuropathy that affects your peripheral nervous system, usually occurs in the feet. Neuropathy can be triggered by a number of different causes. Such causes include diabetes, infections, cancers, disorders, and toxic substances.

Symptoms of Neuropathy Include:

  • Numbness
  • Sensation loss
  • Prickling and tingling sensations
  • Throbbing, freezing, burning pains
  • Muscle weakness

Those with diabetes are at serious risk due to being unable to feel an ulcer on their feet. Diabetics usually also suffer from poor blood circulation. This can lead to the wound not healing, infections occurring, and the limb may have to be amputated.

Treatment

To treat neuropathy in the foot, podiatrists will first diagnose the cause of the neuropathy. Figuring out the underlying cause of the neuropathy will allow the podiatrist to prescribe the best treatment, whether it be caused by diabetes, toxic substance exposure, infection, etc. If the nerve has not died, then it’s possible that sensation may be able to return to the foot.

Pain medication may be issued for pain. Electrical nerve stimulation can be used to stimulate nerves. If the neuropathy is caused from pressure on the nerves, then surgery may be necessary.
